The Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a program within the Student Learning Center that utilizes embedded "peer educators," called SI Leaders to provide specific support for difficult courses.
Unlike Tutoring, SI Leaders work with specific faculty, courses, and course sections to design and facilitate group study halls in the evenings.
The program is designed to help students gain a better understanding of the course content, improve study skills, meet new people and improve grades. Studies show that students who attend this form of near peer support regularly can earn up to a letter grade higher than those who choose not to attend.
Session Information
The SI academic schedule is published during the first week of classes. This includes the course section and its session location(s), as well as the SI Leaders' office hours.
Note: SI Leaders are students employees of the university. They have the autonomy to change, cancel, and add review sessions throughout the semester. The best way to keep up with their schedule is through course announcements in AsULearn.
Session Expectations
Regularly attend class and sessions.
SI is not a replacement for class or communicating with your professor. Students who attend at least one session often see academic improvements in their grades.
Bring your notes, materials, and questions.
SI Leaders are trained to meet fellow students where they are in the active learning process. They are successful when their students are, too.
Remember to have fun!
SI sessions are low-stakes opportunities to study and connect with your classmates in a safe and comfortable learning environment
Program Benefits
The SI program is completely free and voluntary for App State students. There are many benefits to attending SI Sessions, including:
